How to stay focused is difficult especially when stressed. The art of how to stay focused is a skill that has been lost with distractions upon us 24/7.
Everyone feels stressed sometimes, but what is stress? How does it affect your health and your ability to stay focused? What can you do about it?
What Is Stress?
Stress is a normal physical response to events that cause a sense of threat or disrupt your balance.
On the other hand, a situation of chronic stress can be considered as pathological. It can lead to digestive disorders, headaches, sleep disorders, or other physiological disorders.
In people with asthma, stress can cause asthma symptoms to deteriorate. The same is true for people who are depressed, anxious, or have other mental disorders.
Means and techniques can combat stress, especially when it is chronic, such as relaxation activities, or breathing.
Causes Of Stress
Stress is triggered by situations that represent “danger” for the individual or stressors. These situations of stress and/or stressors can be related by various contexts depending on the age of the person.
In children and adolescents, these can result in a confrontation with violent, abusive, or conflictual situations, such as in the case of parental divorce.
In adults, it will be more stressful situations in everyday life and work, anxiety, and depression. Studies have shown that a chronic state of stress, in the adult, was most often the consequence of an underlying anxiety state.
Exposure to traumatic events can also cause chronic stress. We then differentiate the state of acute stress from the post-traumatic stress state. These two disorders are the consequence of past traumatic events: death, accident, serious illness, etc.
Stress And Our Bodies
Stress can reveal itself through emotional, psychic, and physical signs and symptoms.
Emotionally, a stressed person may be overworked, lack focus, irritable, anxious, anxious, or lose self-esteem.
Mentally, the signs can be likened to abuse of thoughts, a state of constant worry, difficulty concentrating, or difficulties in making decisions and making choices.
The physical symptoms related to stress are such as headaches, muscle aches, dizziness, nausea, sleep disorders, intense fatigue, or eating disorders.
Other consequences can be associated with a state of chronic stress: alcohol and tobacco, an increase in gestures and violent behavior, or the eviction of social relations.
In this sense, chronic stress is not to be neglected and must be identified and treated as soon as possible.

How To Stay Focused?
Part 1
- Accept that you may not succeed in what you are doing, but do it anyway: Think about it. When you focus on something, you are putting all your energy into that. Your brain labels what you are doing as something important. Normally your focus is divided into different things, tasks, ideas, and thoughts.
Therefore, when you focus on one thing, your brain, your mind, says something like “hmmm, this seems to be very important, let’s pay more attention”.
It is healthy to face failure face to face, instead of being distracted by trifles. If you are doing 6 things at once and fail in one, what happens? Nothing, you keep attending the other 5 things that you have to do. However, if you focus on a single task, the moment you fail you will have no choice but to face reality. Effectively, you can’t get sidetracked. Therefore, you must do something to solve it. - Accept that you might not make significant progress in the other areas of your life while you are focused on other tasks: Surely there are plenty of areas in your life in which you could improve. And the safest thing is that you want to improve in all and if possible, right now. Maybe you think that the reward that awaits you if you succeed in an area will take a long time to arrive (such as if you are writing a book) and that makes you weak.
The decision to focus on one thing is usually uncomfortable. To stay focused, you must focus on one thing. If you have to read a 500-page book on international law to pass a career exam, you will not be able to go to the gym at the same time.
Part 2
- Accept that the task you have decided to do is the most important: When a task is sufficiently attractive for you to assume the risk of failure and be willing to dedicate your exclusive attention to it during a certain period, you will be able to condense all your energy in that task.
Take a look at the future to make sure that this task brings you closer to your future goals. For this it is important that you have your goals and objectives well-defined, in this way if you concentrate, you will always know if what you are doing attracts you or moves you away from what you want to achieve. - Learn to fight against distractions by using a winning mentality: Once you have selected the task you want to perform, it’s time to use a winning mentality. When will be the most suitable time to do it? At what time will I have more energy? When will I have fewer potential distractions? Staying focused is apparently simple, but difficult when it comes to the truth. That simplicity is what can deceive you into believing that it is easy.
It Is Up To You
Keeping you focused will take time, dedication, strategy, and a great commitment on your part. To achieve noticeable results, you must learn to set aside other things. On the other hand, the benefits of staying firm, I can assure you that they are the most rewarding you can find.
The more rigid you are when it comes to trying to stay focused, the better your skills will be and little by little it will cost you less and you will be more effective. Many times people act reactive, letting themselves be carried away by distractions, things with apparent urgency and little importance, etc. The key is to learn to act proactively, that is, by making decisions about what is important in your life.
